The founder of Kuks, Count Franz Anton Sporck (1662-1738) was one of the most remarkable Bohemian aristocrats of his time (he, for example, introduced Bohemia to the horn and to horn-playing, and established the first public opera theatre in the Bohemian Lands); none of his music collections, however, has survived. The Kuks collection, as known today, was only founded after 1743, after the Brothers Hospitallers came here. Its founder was most probably the second Kuks Prior, musician and poet Patritius Wasserburger (1705-1769). Its development was obviously due to the Viennese Order choirmaster Benignus Roth (1729-1807) who, in 1766, was appointed the sixth Kuks Prior, and who remained in office up to 1806. The Kuks music collection consists of over 900 scores. The authors of music recorded here were closely linked to Kuks or the Brothers Hospitallers. Apart from the works by Kuks choirmasters Maximus Jantschar (1741?-1792), Wernerus Hymbr (1733-1805) and Joseph Faltis (1776-1842) there are compositions by other Order members - Stephanus Sailer (1741-1814), and Joseph Haydn's pupils Blasius Smrček (1745?-1813) and Abundius Micksh (1734 - 1782). The brothers Joseph and Michael Haydn were not Brothers Hospitallers, but they were linked to the Order by their work and by their contacts as friends. Their less known compositions are, therefore, also included in this recording. The Kuks collection contains a number of the works by both Haydns. Some of these are not to be found anywhere else - one such rarity is the first ever recorded Aria pro Adventu "Maria, Jungfrau rein" by Joseph Haydn. The Kuks music collection is one of the most interesting and remarkable collections in Bohemia. In Central European context it represents a singular testament to the formerly rich music life of the Order for the use of which it was put together. None of the compositions on this CD has been recorded previously.
- 1813) a Abundius Micksch (1734 - 1782).
